'Worganic Forms' (word-organic) is a new series of work for the Toronto-based artist Harvey Chan to revisit the elegant forms of Chinese characters with his abstract, free flowing organic forms. In the creative process, ink drawing on traditional rice paper were enhanced with digital treatment. We see a bridge between the old and the new, the ever evolution of human and his condition.
Harvey has his roots from China (Hong Kong), a mega city with its famous harbour open to the Pacific ocean, and neighbouring cities that are full of urban myths, Manga and Anime cult. His recent art 'Worganic Forms', dedicated to the GOOD Edition series, skillfully displays such embrace and mergence of both ancient and contemporary cultures.
Harvey has established himself as an illustrator since graduated from Ontario College of Art and Design. For many years, Harvey's diversified approach on commercial assignments is also greatly reflected on his personal work. Figurative work has always been a primary subject in his drawings, paintings and sculptures for a long time. in recent years, spiritual and natural forms has slowly emerged in his work and taking the central stage. Fantastical and hybrid forms are found in Harvey's most recent creations. In the GOOD Edition series, the chinese characters Anxiety, Compliance, Exit, Feeling, Spirit and Thoughts unite with free organic forms he so well-acquainted with in a rhythmic, enigmatic and cosmic dance.
