The Taiwanese artist Yao Jui-chung has worked with photography and photo-installation for over a decade. He has won numerous awards before making his crucial appearance in the 47th Venice Biennale. He has exhibited internationally in Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, London, Singapore, Canada and China.
Yao's work builds typically around the political themes of power struggles and domination, and the deterioration of culture in a global scale. However the most recent series WONDERFUL are drawings that reference to classical Chinese painting from the Ming Dynasty - not without twists. The body of work was created in 2007 during the Glenfiddich Distillery artist residency in Dufftown, Scotland. Over thirty drawings were created which include bathing in hot springs, mountain climbing, chess playing, meditating as well as a bedroom scene. The originals are ink-drawings on paper with gold leafs.
The GOOD Edition here depicted a bedroom scene with reference to Ming Dynasty's erotic drawings - with Yao's characteristic dog-faced figure in bed with the devil.
