GOOD Edition presents six works from My Le Nguyen's series "Small Places of Vietnam" (2006-7).
Originally from Vietnam and now living and working in Toronto, My Le Nguyen is an avid photographer whose work embraces an on-going search for her roots and identity.
The images from "Small Places of Vietnam" are visual notes, a "second" gaze at places in her home country and an attempt to recapture past memories. But they came as surprisingly fresh and full of curiosity and in the course of trying to rescue memories, she discovered a whole new world that she never knew was there.
The artist wrote,"On my second trip back to Vietnam in 2006, I coincidently met some photographers from DaNang on my second day there. For 2 months after that, I “tagged” along with them traveling from North to South where I saw parts of Vietnam I never knew existed.
These images are from the exploration of villages of the Vietnamese tribal people, narrow alley ways, old Hanoi, small markets in Saigon, and around the house I lived in as a child in DaNang.
My experience with the ordinariness of life in these seemingly small places conjured up a feeling which I think might be my love for the country."
